Should I wear a face mask in public?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently revised their recommendation on face masks for the general public. The CDC now recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

How do I properly wear a cloth face covering?

Cloth face coverings should:

  • Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face and bridge of nose.
  • Be secured firmly with ties or ear loops.
  • Include multiple layers of woven fabric.
  • Allow for normal breathing without restriction.
  • Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape.
Can I clean my face mask at home?

Disposable masks made from non-woven fibers, KN95, and N95 masks cannot be safely cleaned at home. Exposure to excessive amounts of water and cleaning products will destroy the fibers and can damage the carbon filtration systems of N95 respirators.
